Data sources and licences
Every point in Chronoseer links to the source it came from. This page lists those sources, the licence each one is published under, and how we credit it. Last checked 4 November 2026.
Event data
Wikidata
Wars, battles, sieges, protests, strikes and other dated events, with their places, dates and links between them. Wikidata's structured data is released into the public domain, so no credit is required. We credit it anyway, and every entry from it carries its Wikidata id.
Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP)
Armed conflicts, non-state conflicts, one-sided violence and battle-related deaths from 1946 on, with the death figures each dataset reports. We use version 26.1 of four datasets. UCDP licenses its data under CC BY 4.0 and asks users to cite the publications listed with each dataset:
UCDP Battle-Related Deaths Dataset v26.1, conflict level (402 entries).
Natural Earth (the map)
The land, coastlines and borders on the map come from Natural Earth, redistributed as TopoJSON by the world-atlas package (ISC licence). Natural Earth is in the public domain, and credit is optional. Made with Natural Earth.
Software and fonts
The map is drawn with MapLibre GL JS (BSD 3-Clause licence). The fonts are Unbounded, Manrope and JetBrains Mono, all under the SIL Open Font Licence.
The archive grows as we add sources. A source appears here only once its data is shown on Chronoseer, and only when its licence allows commercial use.
